Important Meeting Wednesday Night 9/9/15

There is a very important public meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2015 at 5:30 p.m. at the Dennis Police Department Community Room. This is a joint meeting between the Selectmen and the Finance Committee to discuss a Purchase and Sale agreement between the Town of Dennis and and the Phil Griswold gas station at the intersection of Upper County and Rt. 28 ( Main St. ). This acquisition  would be very instrumental in fixing the intersection at this location as well as the opportunity to enhance and beautify the main entrance into Dennis and Dennis Port from the East. At the conclusion of this meeting the Selectmen could take a vote to forward the article to Town Meeting on Oct. 27, 2015. It would require a two thirds vote from Town Meeting to purchase this property. If you would like to see this article on the warrant for Town Meeting, please come to this meeting on Wednesday to voice your support. If you can’t make it, please email the Selectmen and the Finance Committee with your support. Thank You in advance,

Don Robitaille,                                                                                                                         Dennis Port Revitalization Committee

Tonight’s Concert Postponed Until 8/25/15

Obviously we need the rain, but it has caused the cancellation of Bocce this morning and a postponement of tonight’s concert at the West Dennis Graded School. Kathleen Healy has graciously agreed to reschedule to Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2015 at the West Dennis Graded School. Same start time at 6 p.m.

A big Thank You goes out to Good Friend’s Cafe and Chrissy for sponsoring Kathleen.  If you have had a breakfast there, then you are a repeat customer, if you haven’t, put it on your places to go.

Last Two Concerts in West Dennis

Just a reminder that the last two concerts of the South Side Civic Association Summer Concert series will be held in the front yard of the West Dennis Graded School House. This location is directly across from Paradise Pizza on School St. If you have young ones in tow, there is also a playground in the rear of the school house.  Paradise Pizza has excellent pizzas, subs and dinners for a before or after concert meal. You can also bring a blanket or table and eat at the concert.

The concert is from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The concerts are free and SSCA will pass the hat at intermission for voluntary contributions to help defray costs of the concerts. If there is a cancellation due to weather it will be posted here by 5 p.m. the night of the concert.

Tuesday, August 11, 2015 is Kathleen Healy ( American Folk Music ) sponsored by Good Friends Café of West Dennis.

Tuesday, August 18, 2015 is Michael Whalen and Fintan Stanley ( Broadway Review ) sponsored by Paradise Pizza of West Dennis.

Tonight’s Concert is Still On

We are keeping a close eye on weather reports from different sources and as of 12:30 p.m. we look storm free from 6-7:30 p.m. It appears the storm activity will stay well north of the Cape. If it changes and we know it can, we will make an announcement on the website at 5 p.m. Tonight’s concert is the Bart Weisman Group featuring Carol Wyeth ( Big Band Classics ) sponsored by By the Sea Bed & Breakfast & Suites of Dennis Port.

Haigis Beach Clean-Up

Years ago South Side Civic Association adopted Haigis Beach under the Beach Department’s, Adopt a Beach Program. Every year the weekend before Memorial Day a group of volunteers ( this past weekend we had 13 volunteers and a puppy ) gather at the beach with plastic bags, gloves and for us older volunteers we bring our super duper trash picker uppers, so we don’t have to bend over. We filled approximately 8 trash bags. Unfortunately I have been having problems uploading pictures to the website and cannot get the group picture on the website at this moment. In the meantime here are a few random pictures, until we can fix the problem.

Great Day Sprucing Up the Pocket Park

Wow, today was the perfect example of Community Spirit. We had 18 volunteers show up prior to the 9 a.m. start time with their garden tools in hand waiting to do the annual spring cleaning of the Pocket Park. Before I mention all the organizations involved I have to talk about several outstanding individuals that participated this morning. The youngest helper was two and the oldest in the group was 78. Sophia the 2 year old had a cast on her foot recovering from a broken foot. Another individual just had back surgery and another volunteer just had cancer surgery yesterday. Another South Side Civic Association volunteer who couldn’t make it today due to his work schedule, went to the Pocket Park on Sunday and trimmed all the ornamental grass. Sophia’s mother who was a very active participant is also 8 months pregnant. Talk about an amazing group of community volunteers.
The sun was shining bright and by 10:35 a.m. the Pocket Park was looking great after about 30 man hours of non-stop work. The weeds were pulled, bushes trimmed, pansies were planted and the daffodils were blooming. All the plants were treated with organic and safe fertilizer, a fresh coat of mulch in the flower beds, stone dust on the walk ways and a good watering and the Pocket Park jumped back to life.
As usual, a big Thank You goes out to Greg Rounseville and his outstanding crew at DPW. They had the mulch and stone dust waiting for us on schedule and then picked up the 12 bags of trash we collected. Pat Sakellis representing 3 different organizations was the organizer, team leader and supplier of supplies. We had volunteers from the Dennis Port Revitalization Committee, South Side Civic Association, Village Garden Club, Dennis Port Merchants Association, Dennis Historical Society, Pine Acres Beach Improvement Association ,Martha Murray Real Estate and just a good friend from Harwich and several residents. Another Thank You to Buckie’s who supplied free coffee to all the volunteers and water for the flowers and bushes. It was great time with great people who all just volunteered to make our little Pocket Park the place it was envisioned to be.  Thank You to everyone who participated this morning and enjoy the slideshow below the second picture. Give it a few seconds to load up.

Last Call for Volunteers

Just a reminder if you are not busy tomorrow morning, Wednesday, April 15, 2015, come on down to the Pocket Park with some old clothes and garden tools of your choice. Cleaning, raking, pruning, fertilizing and putting down some fresh stone dust and mulch. It doesn’t get any better than that and it’s all free.
Hoping to see a large contingent of community oriented volunteers at 9 a.m. The Pocket Park is located next to Buckie’s downtown Dennis Port.

Haigis Beach Clean-Up

Just an early reminder that the annual pre-Memorial Day cleaning of Haigis Beach ( the adopted beach of South Side Civic Association ) will take place on Saturday, May 16, 2015 at 9 a.m. Mark your calendars and their will be more updates as we get closer. Looking for volunteers from South Side Civic Association, Dennis Port Revitalization Committee, resident’s of Heritage Sands and anyone else that would like to join the fun. Last year we cleaned the beach in a mini-typhoon that the 12 brave souls won’t forget too soon.
