Harwich Petanque League

Harwich plays the French version of Bocce called Petanque ( pronounced pa-tonk ). Francois Marin started the league several years ago. He said it is a great game and a way to socialize. He has about 30 people that play every Mon. Wed. & Fri. at Brooks Park opposite the Brooks Free Library. The players also have several social events throughout the year. The scoring is the same as Bocce, but it ends there. The Petanques balls ( called boule ) are made of metal and are smaller than Bocce balls. Every player throws from the same circle at each end of the court. The throwing player’s feet remain stationary. All 8 players play from the same end of the court and each player eventually throws 2 balls. When all players have thrown their balls, there will be 16 balls on the Court. More to follow on this story, but here are some pictures from today’s play, Wed. Aug. 21, 2013.  Chatham also has a Petangue team and they play Harwich and alternate courts in each Town.
