Veterans Day Dennis /Yarmouth

Baker Xiarhos AmVets Post 333 Cape Cod had an exceptionally busy day today, Nov. 11, 2014. The day began as it has since last Friday with Reveille at the Field of Honor at Johnny Kelley Park in South Dennis. Next stop, Veterans Day services at 10:30 a.m. at Merrill Park off of Rt. 28  with another contingent of members from AmVets Post 333. When this Service ended it was a short walk over the Bass River Bridge to Packet Landing where Don Costa, AmVets Post 333, organized and conducted another moving ceremony with a number of speakers and singers. Kleenex was in high demand by the end of the program. Congratulations to Don Costa for running a great program. Then it was back to the Field of Honor, where AmVets Post 333 members Elaine Starks and Vinny Fontaine had been holding down the fort. People were still pouring into the Field of Honor as the sun set over Johnny Kelley Park and the Field of Honor. I cannot even venture a guest how many people visited the Field Of Honor this year. It was a constant stream of very appreciative people from sun rise to sun set for 5 consecutive days.

The Field will be taken down early tomorrow morning ( Wed. 11/12/14 ). If you are coming to pick up your flag, please notify an AmVets member before you leave with your flag. There are hundreds and hundreds of volunteer man hours involved from setup to take down. The Thank You’s are endless from the sponsors who dedicated the flag/s to a loved one, to the students from Charter Light School for assembling the new flags, Dennis DPW, Dennis Police Dept., Dennis Parks and Recreation Dept., The Dennis Golf Dept. for the use of a golf cart to get visitors/veterans with walking disabilities out onto the Field,  the 14 volunteer residents and non-residents who helped set up the Field, as I said the Thank You’s are endless. There were a lot more volunteers involved. It is certainly a team and Community effort to make this program successful. Have joy in knowing however you helped or participated, it brought great pride and satisfaction to those families that sponsored a flag as well as the casual visitor. Enjoy the slideshow from today, it includes all 3 locations.
